On 2 February 1936, H J Minett, architect of Podsmead Road, Gloucester, submitted plans to the Gloucestershire Rural District Council to erect a bungalow at Norton for Mr Beach of brick and tile with 39ft width fronting to the road and 120ft in depth.
It was to have blue bricks, a damp course, an 11” cavity in the exterior walls, with 4½“ brick party walls. 3 rooms without a fireplace with the rooms being ventilated by 9”x6” cast iron air bricks. 4” glazed stoneware drains with septic tank, a filter for sewage, wc, and water supplied from a well on the property that had not yet been sunk but was readily obtainable as the neighbouring property had already done this. The roof would consist of brindled Broasley tiles.
The application was approved on 6 March 1936 and the builder of the property was Alfred Henry Stubbs of Twigworth.
From new the property was named Ombersley and was occupied by Alexander and Ellen Cummings with children Norman Cecil and Elizabeth M Jean later. In 1939 Alexander was employed as a railway goods guard. It is not known when they left but the Cummings were definitely still here in 1966 and Mrs Cummings was the first Chairman of the Norton Senior Citizens Club in the 1970s.
Both born in 1898 Alexander had married Ellen nee Taylor in 1919 at Ombersley, Worcs, Ellen’s home and the source of the house name.
Alexander died in 1976 and Ellen in 1984.
The property appears to have been empty in 1985.
[2002]
In 2002 Martyn R and Angela R Cowley were in residence.
I believe that the property was sold in approximately 2006 and is now much changed.
